Here is a little checklist to get you through your first-time Shopify experience.

1. Your home page section is an important part of your customer’s decision-making process in terms of choosing to stick around. Let’s look through the best way one can design their home page for it to be more easily navigated.

  • A minimal design in the first half of your home page is key, you don’t want to overwhelm people with visuals, numerous CTA’ and a lot of text. It will confuse shoppers!
  • Have a direct call to action or a clear value proposition. Giving clarity to customers about what you provide is essential. You want to make sure you get your brand messaging right. Check out our blog post on branding for small businesses.
  • Consider adding specific coupons, offers, end-of-season sales or anything to grab the customer's attention.
  • Keep in mind headlines! Keep them on-brand, succinct, and to the point. Or you can do brief sentences about your shop, making sure to highlight, again, your value proposition and brand messaging.
  • Another to consider is a call-to-action button that catches the eye. Have that button there and people will most likely click!

2. Navigation is another important topic to cover. As mentioned, you want to make sure your site is as user-friendly that everyone can properly navigate through it. You want to provide a good shopping experience to all. Here are some quick tips on Shopify website navigation:

- Be specific in your labelling. If you have a lot of products, it might be best to use a drop-down menu for your main categories or have them be visibly placed on one side of the site.

- Consider putting in a search bar. A lot of the times customers are looking for this, especially if they are trying to find something they need.  

- The most popular products, best sellers, and new stock should be prominently displayed. Users are often unsure about what they want to buy. To help them make their decision, you should offer them suggestions and recommendations.

3. Adding customer reviews, client praises to your homepage can also be a strategic way to keep customers enticed. Why? It builds trust and credibility. Online reviews are rated as trusted as personal recommendations by 88% of consumers. Including some good testimonials and even a video testimonial, could be the extra push you need to make that purchase.

In addition to the reviews, having other sections like the About Us page, Blog, and visible links to social media pages also matters. Every element of your home page should strive to help you accomplish your goals and encourage customers to shop with you further.

4. After you’re happy with your home page, your product pages should be something to be taken care of, too. When a customer is shopping online, you need to be able to sell your product in many ways. It is also helpful if you provide different angles and the option to zoom in and zoom out to allow them to visualize your products.

- Value-driven, self-explanatory product descriptions

Be succinct and straight to the point when describing your products. The information on the website should convey who the product can benefit from, what it does, and how it can be useful. A quick tip is to list down important info in bullet points as customers can digest it better and it’s broken down into smaller units making it quicker to read. No one wants to be reading a whole paragraph. And, don’t forget SEO optimization in your descriptions. Using the right keywords and phrases related to your products will produce a high search volume.

Also, if you have products that need assembly or instructions, it’s best to provide a video explaining the how-to or do-it-yourself product. This will help in customer conversion.

5. Product Suggestions
