Opacity
Opacity refers to how transparent or solid a visual element appears in a design. A fully opaque element is completely solid, while a lower-opacity element becomes more transparent and allows background colours, images, or other layers to show through. Designers use opacity in graphics, interfaces, overlays, buttons, images, backgrounds, gradients, shadows, and visual effects to create depth, softness, emphasis, and layered compositions.
For growing brands, opacity can help create more refined and flexible visual communication across digital and physical touchpoints. It is often used in website design, brand identity, visual brand guidelines, and creative services to support hierarchy, mood, contrast, and visual consistency. When used thoughtfully, opacity can make designs feel more polished and dimensional, while still keeping text, buttons, and important information clear and accessible. As part of a larger brand strategy, opacity helps teams apply visual effects in a way that feels intentional, consistent, and aligned with the brand’s overall look and feel.
