Empty State

An empty state is a UX and UI design pattern that appears when a screen, page, dashboard, search result, inbox, cart, or content area has no information to show. Instead of leaving the space blank, an empty state provides useful guidance, context, or next steps. It may include a short message, illustration, icon, button, CTA, or helpful instruction that explains what happened and what the user can do next.

For growing brands, empty states are important because they help reduce confusion and create a smoother digital experience. A strong empty state can guide users through onboarding, encourage them to add content, complete a setup step, adjust a search, or continue exploring a website or product. Empty states are especially useful in UX design, website design, customer journeys, and brand voice, because the message should feel clear, helpful, and aligned with the brand’s personality. When planned strategically, empty states can improve usability, support stronger brand experiences, and help users move forward with more confidence.
