Overlay

An overlay is a design element or layer placed over another image, background, screen, or interface. Overlays are often used to add colour, darken an image for readability, create a modal window, highlight a message, display a menu, show a tooltip, or guide users through an interaction. In digital design, overlays can help create focus, depth, contrast, and visual hierarchy without replacing the content underneath.

For growing brands, overlays can improve both visual style and usability when they are used thoughtfully. They are common in website design, UX design, brand identity, and creative services, where layered visuals can help guide attention and make content easier to understand. Overlays can also support stronger brand experiences by making interactions feel more polished, intentional, and aligned with the brand’s visual system. When used strategically, overlays help brands create digital experiences that feel clearer, more engaging, and easier to navigate.
