Branding cost is not one number, because “branding” covers very different work. A logo refresh and a positioning overhaul with messaging, identity system, guidelines and launch assets share a name and almost nothing else.

Here is how the commonly published ranges stack up, drawn from Dribbble’s branding cost guide:

  • Logo Design Only: $500–$3,000 — Includes a primary logo and variations.
  • Basic Brand Identity: $1,000–$5,000 — Includes a logo, color palette, and typography.
  • Brand Identity System: $5,000–$20,000+ — Includes a comprehensive logo system, color palette, typography, messaging, and brand guidelines.
  • Full Branding Package: $11,000–$70,000+ — Includes brand strategy, visual identity, messaging, guidelines, and rollout assets.

Those figures come from a design platform’s guidance, so treat them as orientation, not a quote. Other published guides sit in the same neighborhood but climb higher at the top end: one 2026 design-pricing guide says a complete brand identity with strategy, messaging, visual system and guidelines routinely costs $40,000 to $100,000+ at traditional agencies.

The spread is wide for a reason. A solo designer, a boutique studio and a large network agency all price the same deliverable differently, because they carry different overhead, seniority and strategic depth.

For growth-stage companies, the realistic zone is usually the middle of the table: a strategy-led identity system, not just a logo. If you are a venture-backed SaaS company repositioning ahead of a new funding round, plan for the upper half of that band, since you are buying research, positioning and a system that sales, product and marketing all use.

How agencies price branding work

The fee you see depends as much on the billing model as on the scope. AIGA, the professional association for design, describes several models: time and materials, fixed fee, and use-based, licensing or hybrid compensation.

Fixed project fee

You pay one agreed price for a defined set of deliverables. This is the most common structure for identity work. In a 2023 survey of 267 branding professionals, 69% reported using fixed project pricing, compared with 36.7% for hourly rates and 19.9% for retainers (respondents could use more than one).

Fixed fees give you a number you can take to your CFO. The tradeoff is that the scope must be precise. AIGA notes that fixed-fee proposals should spell out inclusions and exclusions, because requests beyond scope are handled through separately approved and invoiced change orders.

Hourly or time and materials

Hourly billing suits evolving scopes where nobody can define the end state on day one. One 2026 guide puts established agencies at $100 to $300 per hour and freelancers or boutiques at $50 to $200. Other sources report higher agency rates, particularly in major metros, so ask for the blended rate and the seniority mix behind it.

With time and materials, AIGA points out that out-of-pocket expenses can be billed on top. Ask for an estimate cap and a reporting cadence.

Monthly retainer

Retainers fit continuing work: brand consultation, content, creative production, campaign support. The same guide reports retainers starting around $10,000 per month for brand strategy engagements, though ongoing creative or channel retainers can start lower. Our own published pricing reflects that range, which we cover below.

Value-based and performance-linked

Some agencies tie fees to business outcomes. In the survey above, 35.2% used value-based pricing and 7.5% performance-based pricing. These models can align incentives well, but they need clear, traceable metrics agreed upfront, or the arrangement gets contentious fast.

If you want a view of how agency pricing compares with automated alternatives in another marketing discipline, this agency versus AI cost comparison shows the same cost, speed and results tradeoffs at work.

What drives the price up or down

When the same survey asked what branding professionals weigh when quoting, the answers were consistent: 80% cited time and effort, 70.8% project scope and 63.7% expertise and experience. In practice, six factors do most of the work.

That last point is where many budgets break. A brand identity that never reaches the website, the product and the campaigns does not change revenue. If you are planning the full rollout, our guide on how much branding should cost walks through budgeting for it.

What you get at different budget levels

Four branding investment levels from basic identity work to comprehensive enterprise rebranding.
Simple logo project compared with a complete brand system used across websites, sales, and marketing.
Brand identity moving from guidelines into website, packaging, advertising, and marketing execution.
Two branding proposals revealing different levels of strategy, research, identity, and implementation scope.

Price bands only help if you know what sits inside them. Use this as a rough map, then verify against any proposal in front of you.

Lean: under about $7,500

Expect a logo, a color palette and typography, maybe a one-page style sheet. Little or no research. This works for a very early company that needs a credible mark and will revisit positioning later. If logo work alone is your question, see how logo design pricing breaks down.

Standard: roughly $5,000 to $20,000

Here you typically add a brand strategy workshop, messaging and a fuller guidelines document. This suits service businesses and early startups that have product-market fit and need a consistent look and voice.

Comprehensive: roughly $11,000 to $70,000 and above

This tier usually includes audience research, positioning, naming support, the full identity system, guidelines, templates and launch assets. Growth-stage companies with sales teams, investors or multiple products tend to land here, because inconsistency across channels starts to cost real pipeline.

Enterprise and rebrand: higher still

Multi-market rebrands, architecture across several product lines, and regulated-industry review can push totals into six figures. These engagements also carry extra internal cost: legal review, signage, product updates and employee communication.

How to budget for a branding agency

Brand strategy and identity connected to website, advertising, retention marketing, and measurable growth.

You will see rules of thumb, such as setting aside 5 to 10% of annual revenue for branding activity. Treat that as a conversation starter, since it blends identity work with ongoing marketing and varies enormously by stage.

Our branding agency hiring guide adds the questions to ask on discovery calls.

Why we price brand and performance together

Most cost guides treat branding as a one-time design purchase. We see it differently. A brand that does not show up in your conversion rates, your paid creative and your retention flows is an expensive style guide.

That is why we built our model around brand-backed performance™: branding, creative, web and performance marketing planned as one system. When strategy, identity, website and channels come from one team, you avoid the handoff gaps where budgets leak, the same message gets rebuilt three times, and nobody owns the result.

It also changes how you should read a quote. Ask what the identity will do on the website, in the ad account and in the lifecycle emails, and who is accountable for that. We bill by project, monthly retainer or performance-linked agreement, and we prefer to be transparent about scope early, because surprises help nobody.

What our pricing looks like

Branding, web development, print and packaging, Shopify and Webflow work are quoted to scope, so there is no published price for them. That is deliberate: a strategy-led rebrand for a regulated company is a different job from a launch identity for a seed-stage startup.

For ongoing work, our published monthly starting points are:

Our monthly starting rates are:

  • Creative Services: From $4,000/month
  • AI Content Studio: From $4,000/month
  • Paid Media Management: From $5,500/month
  • Content Marketing: From $5,500/month
  • Social Media Management: From $6,000/month
  • Retention Marketing: From $6,500/month
  • Growth Strategy: From $8,500/month

These are starting points, and the final figure depends on scope. You can see the full list on our pricing page.

Is the investment worth it?

A strong brand shortens sales cycles, supports pricing power and makes every channel work harder. Those effects are real, but they are hard to attribute to a single line item, so set expectations before you start.

The cheapest path is rarely the lowest total cost. A rushed logo that has to be redone in 18 months, or an identity your web team cannot implement, costs more than a well-scoped project done once. Pair the identity investment with a plan to measure it: branded search volume, conversion rate on key pages, and retention rate are all trackable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Low-cost branding requiring future rework compared with a durable brand system supporting long-term growth.

How much does a branding agency charge for a startup?

Most startups spend somewhere between $5,000 and $20,000 on a standard brand identity with strategy, messaging and guidelines, per published US pricing ranges. VC-backed companies with several audiences and a website to rebuild often spend more. Ask for deliverables and exclusions in writing so you can compare quotes fairly.

Is a retainer or a fixed fee better for branding?

Fixed fees suit a defined project such as an identity system, since you know the total cost upfront. Retainers suit continuing work like content, creative production and campaigns. Many companies use both: a project to build the brand, then a monthly engagement to apply it.

Why do branding agency quotes vary so much?

Quotes vary because scope, team seniority, research depth and timeline differ. A proposal with workshops, audience research and a full guidelines system is a different product from a logo and palette. Compare line by line before you compare totals.

What extra costs should I plan for?

Budget for change orders on out-of-scope requests, pass-through costs such as licenses and printing, and implementation across your website and packaging. AIGA notes that additional requests under a fixed fee are typically invoiced separately after approval. Your own team’s time in workshops and reviews is a cost too.
